Resting Metabolic Rate testing is helpful for tailoring to individual calorie needs
Knowing how many calories you need a day is one of the biggest unknowns in nutrition education interventions, but it can make or break a weight loss attempt. Without the use of RMR testing, predictive equations are used based off of populations that do a good job 80-90% of the time, but RMR testing is the gold standard for determining energy requirements for any given individual. The test takes 10 minutes and is painless. The client breathes through a one-time-use mouthpiece into a device that measures oxygen consumption by volume of breaths and percent of oxygen per breath and infers from oxygen consumption data (using the abbreviated Weir Equation) the number of calories one needs to maintain weight at rest in a day. The client must prepare by not eating for 4 hours prior to the test, not exercising for 4 hours prior to the test, and avoiding nicotine and other over the counter stimulants for an hour before the test.
