AUSTIN LGBT CHAMBER STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE CITY OF AUSTIN’S DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY:

(Austin, TX) The Austin LGBT Chamber Executive Director Tina Cannon released the following statement regarding the City of Austin/Travis County state of emergency and effective cancellation of SXSW.

“It is with great sadness that I must deliver the news if you haven’t heard it by now, that the Mayor of Austin has issued an order canceling the SXSW Festival for 2020. As of just two days ago, the City’s own Health officials stated that “there is no evidence that closing or any other gatherings will make the public safer” This unforeseen circumstance is obviously out of our control and not our desired outcome.

Our thoughts are with the many small businesses and their workforce in Austin that depend on major events like SXSW to keep their doors open. “
