There are several South by Southwest (SXSW) conferences; the main SXSW is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring, SXSWedu which precedes the main SXSW conference, and the SXSW Eco which happens in the fall.
SXSW began in 1987 as a music conference and festival and has grown in both size and scope. SXSW Music is the largest music festival of its kind in the world, with more than 2,200 official performers and bands playing in more than 100 venues. SXSW Film is a film festival, focusing on new directing talent. It officially launched in 1994. SXSW Interactive also began in 1994, and is focused on emerging technology which has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. SXSWedu was added in 2011 and celebrates innovations in learning.
SXsports was introduced in 2014 as a convergence track open to Interactive and Film badge holders. It explores cultural impact and the human experience, tackles the future of sport in all its forms, and embraces entertainment and innovation.
SXSW Eco began in 2011 and has quickly become the connector for those working to solve the complex challenges facing civil society, the economy and the natural world. This three-day event serves as the platform to create actionable and profitable solutions. SXSW Eco provides unique networking opportunities and cross-sector discussion for diverse, passionate and pragmatic professionals in the public, private and academic sectors.
